Crazy White Limos...
There are many trends in fashion, cars and architecture which we take for granted and we don’t realise that they were once considered crazy and outrageous ideas.
However, new ideas have to come from somewhere and when they do there will always be people who will scoff at the designer’s vision and claim that ‘they’ll never last’. While there are many trends which have fulfilled this negative prophecy, there are many more which have melded so seamlessly into our everyday lives that we can’t even remember when they began.
For example, the white limousine is considered a given at any limo hire company as they are very popular as wedding cars and are a good neutral colour for business meetings and sometimes even funerals.
However, white limousines are really only a recent trend, developing over the last 22 years. Back in the 1970s, only one in 50 limousines produced was white, which is hard to imagine in this sea of multi-coloured limousines on the streets today.
However, white limousines really took off in the 1980s when the stretched limousines also became popular. Again, like with any new product or variation, there was scepticism about the stretch limousines with many coachbuilders maintaining that any limo stretched over 50” would break in half.
While there are few stories of limos breaking in half, they have continued to grow, stretch and morph into cars which seem strange and outrageous to some now, but will assimilate into the limo hire industry with the undetectable stealth of the white limousine.
There are many limo hire companies scoffing at the SUV limousines and refusing to buy and hire any of them. However, the limo hire companies who bought and hired out the white limousines in the ‘70s and ‘80s also got grief from coachbuilders who were only thinking about the current limo hire market of business people and not considering that the market could grow into retail passengers who wanted a stretch limousine and didn’t care what colour it was.
Some limo hire companies embraced this new wave in the ‘70s and ‘80s and are still going strong today, while others simply ignored the advancements in their own industry – a very bad way to do business.
